a week of thanksgiving

I promised my nephew that I would post a series of "thankful" etegami for one week on Facebook. I decided to fulfill that promise with etegami-collages, so that they could do double-duty as my own contributions to the box-card etegami challenge I am currently hosting.

I made #1 (rooster crowing) and #2 (early morning newspaper delivery) because I am thankful that I woke up this morning. I'm planning to do a spin-off series with these two, called "The Sounds that Morning Makes."  I made #3 to express my delight in the coming of autumn.  I made #4 because watching some people peck at the keyboard with one finger makes me so grateful that I was taught how to type properly. I made #5  because I'm thankful for being able to live in Japan. I made #6 because I'm thankful that there are always things to take delight in, no matter how hard life is sometimes. I made #7 because I take delight in the form and function of dragonflies. I made #8 to express my thankfulness in being able to see colors.

  1. I think we're on the same wavelength this week with dragonflies, but I'll admit I like yours better!

    1. Thanks, Linda. I've been painting a lot of dragonflies, and testing different styles, but I'm not quite sure I've found what I'm looking for...

  2. Debbie, these are all fabulous, maybe my current favorites. I love the mixed media and clever compositions.

    1. Thank you, Margie. Japan has some of the best patterned boxes for using as cards, and I sure won't look at bills, receipts, and ad cards as trash ever again.

    1. Thanks. This fox is one of my favorites too. Ever since I cut him out of his original etegami, I keep re-using him for collages. After I scan him in one collage, I peel him off to use him again in another collage. I don't know how much life he has left in him....

  4. That is a lovely idea - not just to list the things we are grateful for, but to spend some time absorbing the thought and expressing it again visually. Gives it some time to become part of our bones. I think I will give it a try also.

The quality of line in your drawings and text always speaks to me. Love visiting your page.

    1. You expressed my thoughts better than I could. It's really true that making these cards gives me time to really consider and absorb the thought. In most parts of my daily life-- apart from etegami, I mean-- I'm always in a rush and I don't take as much time to absorb and express as I should.
