illustration friday (transportation)
I will never forget the exuberant feeling of flight that I got from my first pair of roller skates. Unlike the skates in this etegami, they were simply wheeled metal frames that screwed tightly to my shoes. Remember those? The words that accompany the image are the first two lines of "Brand New Key," a pop song written by folk singer Melanie (Melanie Safka), which was a hit in the early 1970s.

Oh yes, I remember the skates and the song! But a pair of blue skates like these would've been ultra cool! This definitely "transports" me back in time! :o)
ReplyDeleteI, too, had a pair of clamp-on skates as a kid. I took one of them apart and built a skateboard out of it. I never did master the art of skating with those darn clamp-ons!
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember those. They were not very good but still I had fun with them. Nice piece.
ReplyDeleteWow! If this doesn't bring back fond memories. That was my favorite after-school activity.
ReplyDeleteI broke my arm wearing a pair of tie-on skates! I love that song, I'll be humming it all afternoon... but perhaps singing the alternative Wurzel's version... 'I've got a brand new combine harvester'...
ReplyDeleteCool! I love to skate**
ReplyDeletebrilliant, I loved my skates, and yes my first pair were the same as yours, but my partner got me a pair just like the illustration for Christmas few years ago. The real retro roller disco ones:)
ReplyDeletelove your illustration style
I love this idea! I miss roller skates they were fun I had some blue ones! on the other hand roller blading terrified me.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for dropping in and leaving encouraging comments. What fun to discover this kernel of common experience even though we must surely come from different backgrounds and generations!
ReplyDeleteI loooooved going to the rollerskating rink! Your etegami brings back memories! ;D
ReplyDeleteI don't know the song, but this is really upbeat!
ReplyDeleteRollerskating brings back memories - they were fun but I never quite got the hang of them!
ReplyDeleteGreat work - lovely illustration and words to go with :)
Oh, how I loved skating down to the candy shop as a kid with my friend. Though I'm sure the shop owner's weren't too happy to see us coming rolling in. Hah.
ReplyDeleteWonderful work and thanks for reminding me of some very fun skating times.
The song brings happy memories as does the traditional Japanese technique and brushes. My brother lives in Tokyo, so I go visit every other year or so and am always seeking out the beautiful papers, crafts and places and on and on... Love going through your blogs.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember those! I lived on skates as a kid! Great illo.
ReplyDeleteI see you have joined the Sketchbook Project as well, and have made good progress!
I had a pair of those skates too! Loved them. Clanky old things that rattled my fillings (if I had had them at that age). Great illustration and good memory - thanks.
ReplyDeleteI really like your roller skates and the way the type fits around them. Nice! I had a pair just like these in white, but the blue looks a lot cooler.
ReplyDeleteReally lovely and nostalgic. I wish I still had the nerve to roller skate but I don't bounce like I used to.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for sharing your memories. I haven't been able to skate in decades, myself. (No bounce, no balance, no flexibility, bad knees-- shall I go on?) But I can still relive my childhood memories... :D
