partridges on a pear (tree)

I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately, giving etegami a bit of chigiri-e accent, or combining traditional etegami with the collage-style mail art that seems to be so popular in the West. Today I was looking at some pear drawings that were left over from one year I'd used pears for my Christmas card design. Although I'd been somewhat disappointed in the drawings, I received a lot of positive feedback when I posted them online. So I ended up keeping the leftover drawings I would otherwise have thrown away. Today I decided to use them as a base for a hybrid mailart greeting card, by gluing some cutouts of partridges onto the drawings of the pears. I still have a strong resistance to messing with traditional etegami method. I'm not sure what to think of these hybrids. Shall I put them in the post? The jury is still out.

  1. I like very much your hybrid mailart greeting cards!
I personally use normally the collage-style mail art because is faster: when I have 5 minutes free at the office, I cut and paste some paper :)

  2. Thanks for your encouragement! I like the 3-D effect I get when I combine etegami with cut-out photos, but I'll need to experiment a lot more before I feel completely comfortable with this hybrid style.

  3. I love the contrast of the soft, painterly pear with the clarity and detail of the birds. It's beautiful. I bet it looks better in person.

  5. Deborah - thank you VERY much for your Partridges on a pear! I love it!
I am fascinated by the effects of the painting on the washi paper - by the way, are the partridges digital collage?

  6. @Dr.Brignone- What a coincidence. I, also, received your latest card (snails, autumn leaves) today! The autumn colors are delicious. :D

The partridges are cut out from photos I downloaded from the internet and pasted onto the original card. But I was afraid the collage would get torn off in the post so I copied it onto another card. What do you use on your cards to protect them from tearing?

  7. Glad you received it! I like when I have a subject to work about, because I think the addressee will appreciate more my work.

I normally use diluted vinavil to paste AND as fixative final varnish.
I had torn problems just once, with one of my first works, when I thought the wallpaper glue was a good glue. Actually, It was not for collages!
However, when I need to paint (the few times I have the time!), I use a hairspray as fixative varnis.
